BLACKFEET

Blackfeet Reservation

The current Blackfeet Nation governmental structure was created under the 1934 Indian Reorganization Act. The governing body is the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council (BTBC) which consists of 9 members, each elected for 4 year terms (changed in recent years from the original 2 year terms in order to promote political stability). Elections are held in even-numbered years, and terms are staggered. BTBC members work full-time and often meet several times a week. The Blackfeet Law and Order Code was promulgated in 1999. It is updated periodically by Resolutions of the Business Council.
